Taking first place was the team of Tim Gilliam of McKenzie, TN and Scott Watson of Paris, TN with a total weight of 11.17 pounds and earning $1,500.00.

This past Saturday February 21st Crappie USA held a qualifying event at J.R.’s Marina on Weiss Lake near Cedar Bluff, Alabama. Nearly 125 anglers from 10 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic to be held at Columbus, Mississippi in the fall of 2009.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the team of Tim Gilliam of McKenzie, TN and Scott Watson of Paris, TN with a total weight of 11.17 pounds and earning $1,500.00. Tim and Scott were fishing from the Hwy 9 Bridge to the dam in 6-15 feet of water. The team was fishing over man made stake beds and natural stumps using Teaser jig heads and Southern Pro black/white tubes and OD green tubes. Tim and Scott caught only 15 fish throughout the day.

Second place went to the Murray, KY team of Doyle and Sonny Milby with a weight of 10.63 pounds and earning $850.00. Doyle and Scott were Spider Rigging in Yellow Creek using green/yellow Southern Pro Hot Grubs in 17 feet of water. The team caught 40 fish today.

In third place was the Cochran, GA team of Billy and Scott Williams weighing in 10.46 pounds and earning $550.00. Billy and Scott were fishing the upper part of the lake using black/chartreuse Big Bite Baits. The team caught over 40 fish during the day.

Amateur Division

In first place in the amateur division was the Gaylesville, AL team of Adam Mobbs and Carlton Teague with a total weight of 11.49 pounds and earning $1,100.00. Adam and Carlton caught over 70 fish during the day of competition vertical jigging in 10-12 feet of water early in the day.

They were using Southern Pro Minnow Tubes on B’n’M Poles. Later in the day they moved out to 17 feet of water catching their bigger fish on baby bass colored minnow tubes.

Big Fish Award

Taking big fish of the event was the Piedmont, AL team of Jimmy Fain and Matthew King with a 2.30 pound crappie and earning $600.00.
